In France, you are not granted a specific number of days of sick leave per year, but this does not mean that you cannot take time off from work as long as you can justify your absence. Some go as far as saying that France is one of the best places to be sick. If you are curious to learn more about leave of absence in France, keep on reading.

Sick leave: your obligations

As mentioned before, you can take a few days off, but you have to justify your absence. More precisely, you have to get your hands on a medical certificate. You will need the doctor’s note for the employer, but also for the CPAM. This organization is in charge with controlling your sick leave period an if you have any questions, feel free to get in touch. To contact the health insurance fund, get the numero CPAM 93. Once you are handed the medical certification, you have 48 hours to send the note to your employer and this institution. It is important to pay attention to the fact that the doctor’s note is made up of three parts. Parts 1 and 2 go to the CPAM, while part 3 is for your employer. If you want to extend your leave of absence, you have to send the parts of the medical note once again.

Compensation during sick leave

Your company does not have to pay you for your first days of sick leave. Nonetheless, if you take more than 3 days off from work, your salary is guaranteed by social security. In order to receive a daily subsistence allowance, it is necessary to meet the criteria of the CPAM. People who have at least a year of service with a company are paid during their absence. This also applies to employees who have worked 200 hours in the last 3 months. Social Security substitutes part of your salary. The daily subsistence allowance is equal to 50% of your salary. There is a catch: your salary must not exceed 1, 8 times the growth-indexed minimum wage.

Sick leave does not confine you to your home

Contrary to popular opinion, you are not a prisoner in your own home. While it is true that you will be checked upon, you are allowed to leave the house. However, you cannot go out when you feel like it, even if it is the weekend. You have a schedule of authorized absence that does include medical treatments or examinations. CPAM agrees with every outing. Usually, you will have to be at home between 9-11 and 14-16. If you do not respect the schedule, your financial compensation will be significantly reduced, if not suppressed altogether.
